Colombo, Sri Lanka – Health authorities have issued an urgent warning over the rising number of dengue cases reported across Sri Lanka, as persistent rains continue to create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), a total of 40,633 dengue cases have been reported from January 2025 to October 20, with 22 dengue-related deaths recorded during this period.
Speaking at a media briefing, Community Medical Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera stated that the Western Province has reported the majority of cases. High numbers of infections have also been recorded in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, and Kegalle districts.
Dr. Samaraweera further noted that the highest number of dengue fatalities were reported from Ratnapura District.
According to Dr. Samaraweera, most mosquito breeding sites have been identified in schools, government institutions, places of worship, and abandoned lands and buildings. She urged the public to take immediate preventive action by destroying mosquito breeding grounds and maintaining clean surroundings.
“Anyone experiencing fever for more than two days should seek medical attention without delay,” Dr. Samaraweera emphasized, warning that early diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent severe dengue cases.
Health experts continue to remind the public that dengue spreads fast but so can awareness.
The public is advised to stay alert for the following key symptoms:
- Severe Headache
- Vomiting
- Body Pain
Authorities stress that community cooperation, regular inspection of surroundings, and timely medical attention are vital to curbing the spread of dengue.
