ComBank Backs Nationwide Triathlon to Combat Breast Cancer in Sri Lanka

ComBank partners with Indira Cancer Trust to raise breast cancer awareness

In a powerful fusion of sport and health advocacy, the Commercial Bank of Ceylon has partnered with the Indira Cancer Trust (ICT) as the Gold Sponsor for the groundbreaking TLC (Touch | Look | Check) – Triathlon 2025. This nationwide event series aims to tackle Sri Lanka’s most common cancer among women head-on by promoting the life-saving message of early detection.

A Race Against Time

The statistics are sobering: breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Sri Lankan women, with an average of 15 new cases detected and, tragically, three lives lost every single day. The TLC Triathlon 2025 is designed to address this crisis by taking the critical message of breast self-examination to communities across the island. The core mission is to empower women with the knowledge to Touch, Look, and Check for early signs of the disease, a simple practice that significantly improves survival rates.

The Nationwide Triathlon Series

For the first time in Sri Lanka, a triathlon series will travel across the country, combining the physical challenge of swimming, cycling, and running with vital health education. The events are set to draw over 4,000 athletes and 10,000 spectators, creating a massive platform for awareness.

Alongside the races, healthcare professionals will conduct live demonstrations, teaching participants the simple, free, and effective TLC method of self-checking.

Event Schedule for October 2025:

  • October 5th: Kilinochchi (Rodrigo Grounds)
  • October 12th: Batticaloa (Weber Grounds)
  • October 19th: Matara (Kotawila Grounds)
  • October 26th: Colombo (Independence Square)

A Partnership with Purpose

This initiative is a cornerstone of Commercial Bank’s commitment to community well-being and women’s empowerment.

Speaking on the partnership, Commercial Bank Managing Director/CEO Mr. Sanath Manatunge said, “Breast cancer affects far too many Sri Lankan women and families. We believe awareness and early detection are key to saving lives. As a Bank with a strong commitment to empower women and support community well-being, we are honoured to partner with the Indira Cancer Trust on this landmark initiative.”

The Indira Cancer Trust, established in 2016, is a pillar of support for cancer patients in Sri Lanka, providing the nation’s first dedicated helpline and crucial facilities like the Suwa Arana paediatric palliative care centre. Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka College of Oncologists, this triathlon series represents a united front in the nation’s fight against breast cancer.
