The Ministry of Education has introduced an enhanced version of the โ€˜Surakshaโ€™ student insurance scheme, offering expanded medical and life insurance benefits for schoolchildren. The renewed agreement with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd. was officially signed on Thursday (09) in the presence of Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa.

Under the upgraded scheme, inpatient coverage has been raised to Rs. 300,000, while outpatient treatment limits have increased to Rs. 20,000. The critical illness cover now begins at Rs. 1.5 million, providing stronger financial protection for students facing major health conditions. Accident benefits have also been revised to include Rs. 200,000 for permanent disability and up to Rs. 100,000 for temporary disability.

Students from families earning below Rs. 240,000 annuallyโ€”an increase from the previous Rs. 180,000 limitโ€”will now be eligible for expanded life insurance benefits. Families registered under the โ€œAswesumaโ€ welfare program can claim Rs. 75,000 per deceased parent or guardian, up to a maximum of Rs. 225,000 per family.

The revised policy also extends outpatient benefits to students suffering from chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ulcerative colitis, Crohnโ€™s disease, and rheumatic heart disease. Additionally, Rs. 75,000 will be provided for scoliosis braces and another Rs. 75,000 for hearing aids prescribed by ENT specialists.

According to the Ministry, the updated insurance coverage will take effect for incidents occurring on or after September 1, 2025.
