Sri Lanka Hosts 78th WHO South-East Asia Regional Committee Session

Colombo, 13 October 2025 – Sri Lanka is hosting the 78th session of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Committee for South-East Asia from 13 to 15 October. The three-day event will bring together WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr. Katerina Boehme, health ministers from eight member countries, ambassadors from two nations, and other WHO experts. The session will focus on shaping the region’s health strategy for the coming years.

Key topics on the agenda include promoting healthy ageing through stronger primary healthcare services and combating tobacco use. Health ministers and senior officials are also expected to discuss expanding the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF) and accelerating measures against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Participants will adopt new proposals addressing major health challenges, review progress on previous resolutions, and reaffirm commitments to protect and promote the health and well-being of all people. The session will also emphasize revitalizing actions toward achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the region.
