Colombo, Sri Lanka โ€“ October 2025:
Sri Lanka is entering a new phase of demographic change, with official data from the Census of Population and Housing 2024 (Department of Census and Statistics) indicating subtle but important shifts in marriage patterns, birth rates, and population structure.

According to the 2024 Census, Sri Lankaโ€™s total population stands at 21,763,170, reflecting a moderate slowdown in growth compared to previous decades. Experts describe this as part of a natural demographic transition experienced by many developing nations as education, healthcare, and economic conditions evolve.

A total of 139,290 marriages were registered in 2024, continuing a gradual decline observed since the post-pandemic period. Demographers note that todayโ€™s younger generation increasingly prioritizes education, career development, and financial readiness before marriage, contributing to delayed family formation.

Birth registrations also reflect changing family choices, with 220,761 live births in 2024, lower than in recent years. This pattern, according to public health experts, aligns with greater awareness of family planning, rising living costs, and evolving lifestyle preferences. Meanwhile, deaths reached 220,761, indicating a maturing population and highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare and healthy aging policies.

Migration remains another key factor shaping population trends. Official immigration data record a net outflow of -176,932 people between July 2023 and June 2024, mainly due to skilled workers seeking overseas opportunities.

Despite these figures, experts emphasize that Sri Lankaโ€™s demographic shift is neither negative nor alarming, but rather a reflection of social progress, better health outcomes, and informed family planning. They point out that this period offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen maternal and reproductive health services, enhance support for young families, and align workforce and social protection strategies with emerging realities.

As the countryโ€™s population stabilizes, Sri Lanka is expected to move toward a more balanced and sustainable demographic profile, ensuring that future generations are healthier, better educated, and economically secure.
