Responding to recent media reports, the Castle Street Hospital for Women (Teaching) in Colombo has confirmed that no egg (ova) donation programme is currently being carried out at the hospital.
Dr. Ajith Dantanarayana, Director of the hospital, clarified that only the sperm donation programme is active at this time.
The sperm bank, which was launched recently, has already registered over 150 men as sperm donors, Dr. Dantanarayana stated. So far, ten women have successfully conceived, and over 200 others are currently receiving support through this programme.
He noted that earlier claims circulating in the media about the introduction of an egg donation programme were inaccurate. The misinformation suggested that the hospital had begun collecting donated eggs to assist women with infertility due to inactive ovaries a service that is not being conducted at the hospital.
Dr. Dantanarayana emphasized that the sperm donation programme aims to support couples facing infertility, providing a safe, medically supervised pathway to pregnancy through established reproductive health practices.
