World Osteoporosis Day 2025: “It’s Unacceptable!” – A Global Call to Action on Bone Health

Colombo, October 20, 2025 – As the world observes World Osteoporosis Day 2025, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has launched a global campaign under the theme “It’s Unacceptable!” to raise awareness about the urgent need for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. This silent but serious disease gradually weakens bones, leading to painful and disabling fractures that can significantly reduce quality of life.

According to the IOF, one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 are at risk of osteoporotic fractures. Despite this, nearly 80% of individuals who experience fragility fractures remain undiagnosed and untreated. Experts emphasize that osteoporosis is not an inevitable part of ageing it can be both prevented and managed through healthy lifestyle practices and timely medical intervention. Early bone density screening, a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and regular exercise play crucial roles in maintaining strong bones.

Preventing osteoporosis begins with daily habits that support bone strength. A diet containing calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fish helps maintain bone density, while vitamin D obtained from sunlight exposure or fortified foods improves calcium absorption. Regular weight-bearing exercises like walking, jogging, and strength training stimulate bone formation and reduce the risk of fractures. In addition, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and preventing household falls are key measures for maintaining bone health.

Local health professionals in Sri Lanka also encourage individuals especially postmenopausal women and older adults to undergo regular bone health screenings and adopt bone-friendly habits early in life. By increasing awareness and prevention, communities can significantly reduce the long-term burden of osteoporosis-related fractures, which contribute to immobility, disability, and higher healthcare costs.

The “It’s Unacceptable!” campaign serves as a global reminder that osteoporosis is preventable and treatable if detected early, and that bone health must become a lifelong priority for all.
